Dr. Leroy Maxwell
Dr. Leroy Maxwell has been practicing optometry in Selma for more than 30 years and maintains one of the largest glaucoma practices in the state. He was in the forefront of bringing advanced state of the art technology to patients in rural Southwest Alabama.
Dr. Maxwell is a board-approved optometrist, certified by the Alabama Board of Optometry. He is a native of Arkansas but grew up in Paducah, Kentucky. He graduated from Paducah Tilghman High School with academic honors. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He received his Optometric Doctorate degree from the School of Optometry from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He was awarded a post-doctorate fellowship in Epidemiology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham School of Public Health. Dr. Maxwell started private practice in Selma after receiving a Masters in Public in Health Care Financing also from University of Alabama in Birmingham.
He is a member of the American Optometric Association, Alabama Optometric Association, National Optometric Association and American Public Health Association. Dr. Maxwell was a chartering member of the National Optometric Student Association and served as its first president. He was appointed twice by the Alabama’s governor to the Alabama Board of Optometry. He was later elected vice president and president of the Alabama Board of Optometry.
Dr. Maxwell’s area of expertise includes the management of advanced glaucoma and geriatric vision and cataract co-management.
He currently resides in Selma with his wife Juanda. He has a son, Leroy Jr. and a daughter, Justine.
